Yu is an introverted loner who attempts to form bonds with others by fighting them. Through these battles, he gains insight into people while building his confidence through winning – as seen on the True Ending route.
Chinese words for person (ren in pinyin) and plural people, Yi Ge Ren, can be broken down to two individuals by adding Ge to it – or vice versa; Yi Ge Ren = two people.
Characteristics
Soujiyi may initially appear as an isolated figure, yet he is actually very caring and understanding of friendship. One of Nanako’s few true opponents, he eventually warms up to others despite initially showing great coldness toward them and shows great insight into their emotions.
He may appear somewhat naive at times and is able to avoid statements that would normally cause other male characters trouble due to the fact that he doesn’t intend any offense with what he says. When meeting eventual Investigation Squad members for example, he acts politely around them rather than growing uncomfortable at their behavior as other would do.
He is endowed with a dry sense of humor, finding unexpected things humorous. Additionally, he is extremely patient and does not appear distressed by not making new friendships quickly like others can.
Personality traits
Japanese people typically exhibit a strong sense of social obligation or “omoiyari”. This means they will consider others when making decisions and acting, evidenced through polite behavior towards friends and family or elders, or following social norms such as keeping quiet when on public transport or queuing up in line.
Punctuality is another key characteristic of the Japanese Sou ji yi. Being late to meetings or even casual get-togethers is considered impolite and disrespectful.
Throughout his investigation at Twisted Shopping District, it’s evident that our protagonist greatly values his relationships with his team. He cares deeply for their wellbeing and goes out of his way to protect them. For instance, after Teddie teases Yosuke with fake doppelgangers of himself, our protagonist stepped up courageously and protected Yosuke against them with great courage defending Yosuke from them! Though sometimes appearing emotionless or cold at first glance, his moral compass remains strong.
Physical appearance
Yu is a young boy with brown hair and green eyes. He wears a black jacket with an orange hood and red skirt that recalls traditional Japanese attire, wielding both a sword and staff as his weapons of choice.
Foreigners tend to misunderstand katakana characters used in Japanese, particularly foreigners from outside Asia. It’s important to keep in mind that these symbols of Chinese origin do not correspond directly with words or phrases but should always be read alongside each other.
Yi Kwangsu was an esteemed modernist, nationalist and colonizer of Korea who experienced significant complications when working for Japan from 1939 onwards. This may account for his semi-autobiographical character in The Heartless being both transient and living both Seoul and Tokyo – an allusion to Yi Kwangsu’s early status as a colonial intellectual who was virtually unknown within his colonial metropolis despite dominating student literary life in 1910s student literary circles.
Skills
Yu’s skill names often reference certain expressions or terms via idiom, evidenced by his original moves such as Kenkon Itteki/Big Gamble (Gambling Effort) and Shishifunjin/Raging Lion (Lion Flourished Swiftly).
Yu’s new move in Ultimax continues the theme by adopting the name Juumonji Giri/Cross Slash (Cruciform Cutter), in which she readies her sword for an assault with one-handed swing and downward slamming one-handed strikes slashed with lightning which can help build combos while providing safe pressure relief.
Other notable skills of Yu’s include Zio (Zi, zirconium), an explosive projectile which can zone well and even cause small lightning explosions. He also uses various combo starters that create space and score hits – for instance he has low sliding attacks that hit and sweep foes as well as high jumping attacks which counterattack throws, along with an anti-air slash which he performs midair.
